Sapsuckers

Sapsuckers (genus Sphyrapicus) belong to North American woodpeckers circle of relatives. They are simply known via their loud, high-pitched clicking calls. Most species drum, others simply double-rap. They construct their nests in excavated tree holes. Sapsuckers feed on bugs, spiders, berries, end result, acorns, seeds, sap and honey. Lines of parallel, freshly drilled “sap-wells” in tree bark are a positive signal that sapsuckers are within reach.

Sapsuckers don’t in fact suck sap, they lap it up with a tongue that resembles a paintbrush.
